  • What is a Debit Card?

The basic debit card definition is that they are a type of rectangular payment card that links to the owner’s checking account at their bank or credit union. When a debit card is used for payment, the amount paid is deducted directly from the checking account.

  • Debit Card vs Credit Card

Unlike credit cards, you do not carry a balance on a debit card since you are paying in full when using your debit card to make purchases. Debit cards protect you from going into debt since you cannot spend more than you have. The flip side is that you do not build personal credit with a debit card, which is important for larger purposes and loans down the line.
