Money orders are prepaid checks that will protect funds from loss or theft. If you are buying or selling an antique from a garage sale, using a money order for payment is more secure than a personal check. Money orders are financial instruments that should be treated like cash, so keep them safe and cash them in soon when receiving them.  

Cashier’s checks are also prepaid checks that can only be obtained through a financial institution.  A cashier’s check is used for higher amounts and will cost more than a money order. The funds are put into the credit union’s account when you purchase a cashier’s check. When the receiver cashes it in, the funds will come from the credit union’s account instead of yours. The fee for cashier’s checks is a little more due to the extra protection they provide.
